Hand Stitched Books
Saturday, 17 October, 1-3pm
Hosted by Leah McInnis

Learn traditional and contemporary hand stitching techniques, including the coptic stitch, perfect bound, and various zine formats. Discuss the history of the artist book and creating multiples. We will also look at how to build your own bookbinding jog at home!

Materials: Please bring your own scissors, ruler, assortment of papers, notebook, pencil, sewing needle and thread.

About the host: Leah McInnis is an artist, designer and educator living in traditional Lekwungen territories. Over the past decade, McInnis has self-published numerous artist books and zines that have been exhibited in Canada and abroad, including Zine Fest 2013 in Paris and the 2018 Vancouver Art Book Fair. In addition to her own work, she produces publications, catalogues, posters and ephemera for other artists and arts organizations. She was the Art Director for an independent political magazine in Vancouver from 2013-15 and has been VAC Outreach Coordinator since November 2019.

Social Media 101
Saturday, 14 November, 2-3pm
Hosted by Arden Rose

During this afternoon session, we’ll show you how social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram, can be used to give your art career a boost. Learn how to navigate these platforms in order to connect with potential buyers, curators and galleries across the globe! Share your process with others and make lasting connections online and IRL.

Materials: Please bring a notepad and pen.

About the host: My mission as an artist is to create colorful, meaningful work that makes you remember your joy and has the power to add beauty and energy to your environment.  I’m a Victoria based artist, working in acrylics and collage. I have taken many workshops based on artistic techniques and numerous courses on the Business of Art.  – Arden Rose

Match-Box Art
Saturday, 12 December, 2-3pm
Hosted by Elizabeth Carefoot

These workshops are fluid. Participants are encouraged to tap into their own creativity.  There are no “mistakes”, and there is no critique. I start with a short discussion on how best to proceed and will be on hand to help with technique and to offer choices (in design, personal imagery, colour and symbolism) but only if someone is stuck and has trouble going forward.

All material is provided, (matchboxes, art papers, scissors, glue, paint, coloured pencils, beads, sequins, and other embellishments) including templates for those who need them, as well as step-by-step written instructions to follow.

About the host: I was born in Shanghai, China on May 17, 1938. Because of our British citizenship, my parents and I spent 5 years in a Japanese internment camp during the Japanese occupation of China. We came to Canada in 1949 and settled in North Vancouver. I took painting courses with Gordon Smith, and after graduating from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Education in Fine Arts, I took post-graduate etching and painting courses at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design.  I also trained as a cine-animator with John Dunn of Disney Studios.

I was fully employed at Simon Fraser University first as a Cine-Animator, then as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator, for 35 years, and am now retired. I was instrumental in the founding of a local women’s art group in Surrey, “Coldflash” as well as an artist’s collective, “Z.inc”.

Currently, I am a member of the Gage Gallery Collective in Victoria. I work in many media.  Although I am primarily a fibre artist, working with soft sculpture, stitchery and knitting, I also create acrylic paintings, small box constructions, collages, and coloured pencil drawings. Internationally, my work can be found in collections in Brussels (Belgium), USA, Bangor (Wales), Sapporo (Japan), and Colombia.  The Surrey Art Gallery has two of my prize-winning knitted and soft-sculptures in their Permanent Collection.   Through most of my life I have been keenly interested in Middle Eastern culture, history, arts, music, and dance.  I have trained as a Middle Eastern dancer, both in Egypt, Syria, the US, and locally, and have performed professionally in that capacity for 30 years.

I continue to give lectures on Middle Eastern costume and customs.  I was the Artistic Director and Choreographer for the dance troupe, “Twilight Caravan”, for many years.   Through sales of my artwork, I was able to institute a seed-money fund for emergent artists for several years. I am the 2014 recipient of the Surrey Civic Treasure award.
