Andrea Henning in the Vault
Primordial Gestures of Emotional Reveal (Portrait, 2020)
Andrea Hennig’s installation of hundreds of ceramic sculptures explore how embodied emotions are expressed over time. Her material experimentation with clay began as an exploration of pre-historic female fertility symbols. As well, the work was influenced by vulva-like portrayals of the Virgin de Guadalupe, and later research of contemporary feminist body performance art. The direction of her work shifted suddenly with the death of a loved one. Her relationship with clay became a healing meditation and acknowledgement of universal emotions of grief and joy.
Andrea’s art praxis includes photography, sculpture, painting, drawing and video. She lives in Victoria and Mexico City. Andrea completed her MFA at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, 2022.
This installation coincides with the exhibition, Levelling Up, Breaking Down produced to celebrate International Women’s Day from 4-31 March 2023.
