CreativeMornings/VIC presents “SPICY” with Laura Gildner Friday, 12 April 20247pm – 8pm (doors at 6:45pm) Vancouver Island School of Art @ 302-733 Johnson St (parking available across the street at Johnston St parkade) In-Person only (a recording of this event will be made available online)*please note the late start time and host location for this talk* Join visual artist Laura Gildner for a deep dive into one of her longest-running obsessions and ongoing motivators behind her creative practice. Synchronized swimming- beyond its gravity-defying acrobatics or exaggerated performative clichés- is a floating vehicle for transformation, kinship, defiance, and embodied imagination. It is also an allegorical minefield with a colourful history of stunt experimentation, gladiatorial contests, nightclub acts, and underwater drag. More than just a sport, it is both a blueprint and an invitation to spice up your life- whether in the water, or on land. Laura Gildner is a visual artist who collaborates with strangers, neighbours, would-be celebrities, friends, performers, and various makeshift communities in the creation of her works. Her productions reflect on social, historical, and pop cultural phenomena through creative re-imaginings and absurdist commentaries while centralizing the magic of shared experience. Her recent project, Lovechild, involved making art with Patrick Swayze’s ghost via a biotechnology lab, psychic medium, and dental implants. |
