Join us for the opening reception of contrapposto, a curated group show with work in beading, weaving, soft sculpture, quilting, and installation by Ryan Josey (Halifax), Lawrence Mandes (Rosthern), Aay Preston-Myint (San Fransisco), Carl Stewart (Ottawa), Dale Roberts (Victoria), Nico Williams (Montreal), and Jade Yumang (Chicago).
contrapposto places art by seven queer male-identified artists working in textiles and other hand-made forms in conversation as a way of relating to (queer) histories through non-figuration. The title — a reference to classical sculpture popularized by perhaps the most famous queer artist, Michelangelo– is a red herring and is meant to act as a counter to the work on display, allowing for the artists to be seen as butting up against the hegemony of classification and supposed ‘masters.’ These works operate in opposition to oppressive forces and attempt to offer a new way of seeing histories as well as imagining futures. The work is held-up or in place by what came before, though is also unencumbered and in a sense allowed to be seen because of such tension it presents through the denial of the (male) figure. – Kegan McFadden, exhibition curator
The work on display references a wide variety of source material, taking inspiration from underground publishing (gay social magazines and comic books) to BDSM sex practices, from homophobic murder to nautical signage, and matrilineal histories to personal talismans.

following the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria conference, “In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art and Social Practice.”
Where is the meeting point between thought and production; between what the eye sees and what the hand makes; and how does the overlap of thought and importance of place carry through to its presentation? These and other questions are what have been propelling Lynda Gammon to make art.
Studio Practice: Meditation Practice bridges Gammon’s artistic concerns through installations that incorporate her long-standing use of photography with a renewed exploration of ceramics, inspired by Buddhist practices of meditation. “Over the past several decades, I have considered ideas of the studio through the disciplines of sculpture, assemblage, and photography. My work is positioned between the flat illusionistic space of photography and the volumetric physical space of sculpture.” states the artist.
In this exhibition by Victoria arts community stalwart, Lynda Gammon, the emphasis is on process through a variety of media underscoring an important shift in her focus from studio as subject to the practice itself.
A series of events, including a workshop by Jim Sacamano of the Shambala Centre will take place throughout the exhibit in order to activate the VAC space.
Lynda Gammon is a contemporary artist whose work considers ideas of space and inhabitation through the disciplines of photography, sculpture, performance, and assemblage. She is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Victoria where she has taught for over thirty years and is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Gammon’s work has been exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally over the past four decades. In 2004 she established flask, an artist press dedicated to the production and dissemination of books by artists and writers. The VAC, in partnership with the Bonnie McComb Kreye Studio Residency Program and the Vancouver Island School of Art presents a group exhibition featuring work in diverse media by the recent participants of the studio residency.
About the BMK Residency:The Vancouver Island School of Art has worked in partnership with the Kreye family, to establish the Bonnie McComb Kreye Studio Residency Residents have the use of a private garden studio for up to two months. The residency is open to artists working in all media and across disciplines. This is the first residency of its kind in Victoria. The residency has been created by Donald Kreye in memory of his late wife Bonnie McComb Kreye, who was an artist and educator, who devoted her life to making art and to encouraging the creative talents of all those she came in contact with. She understood the power of art to change lives and to enrich society. The family chose to partner with VISA in offering Bonnie’s studio for a short-term artist residency, because, like Bonnie once was, VISA is dedicated to arts education and support of the local art scene and community at large.

Wilde About Sappho
A Pride Reading by Local Queer Writers
Celebrate Pride Week by joining City of Victoria Poet Laureate John Barton for Wilde About Sappho, A Pride Reading by Local Queer Writers on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Victoria City Hall.
Wilde About Sappho is a celebration of poetry, fiction and spoken word by LGBTQI2S writers from Greater Victoria. John Barton will be joined by Mayor Lisa Helps and guest poets Brian Day, Anne Fleming, Darrel J. McLeod, Arleen Paré, Byron Sollazzo, and Victoria’s Youth Poet Laureate Aziza Moqia Sealey-Qaylow. Each will perform a reading of poetry to mark the 50th anniversary of Canada’s decriminalization of same-sex relationships.
Take the opportunity to revel in readings, rainbow flags, refreshments and glitter.

Brian Day
Brian is the author of four books of poetry, including Conjuring Jesus and The Daring of Paradise. His work has been praised for its “luxurious sensuality” and “sustained spiritual attention.” It has been described as being “fine devotional reading, erotic reading, literary reading, all wrapped into one.” Brian Day lives on Salt Spring Island.
Anne Fleming
Anne grew up in Southern Ontario idolizing the directors at her YWCA summer camp, two self-sufficient lesbians who raised goats and chickens and built their own kayaks. Later, she started writing and by now has published five books of fiction and poetry including Gay Dwarves of America, poemw, and The Goat, a novel for children. Her writing has been shortlisted for the Governor-General’s Award, the Journey Prize, the Danuta Gleed Award, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. The Goat was named one of the 10 best children’s books of the year by The Wall Street Journal and the New York Public Library. She splits her time between Victoria and Kelowna, where she teaches Creative Writing at UBC’s Okanagan Campus.
Darrel J. McLeod
Darrel is Cree from treaty eight territory in Northern Alberta. Before pursuing writing in his retirement, Darrel was a chief negotiator of land claims for the federal government and executive director of education and international affairs with the Assembly of First Nations. He holds degrees in French Literature and Education from UBC. Darrel is working on a second memoir, Peyakow (to be published in 2020 by Douglas & McIntyre), following the events in Mamaskatch: A Cree Coming of Age (2018, Douglas & McIntyre), which won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction and was nominated for the RBC Taylor Prize, George Ryga Award for Social Awareness, and the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award. Darrel lives, writes, sings and plays jazz guitar in Sooke, B.C. and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Arleen Paré
Arleen is a Victoria writer. She has five collections of poetry, two of which are cross-genre. She has been short-listed for the BC Dorothy Livesay BC Award for Poetry and has won a Golden Crown Award for Lesbian Poetry, the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize, a CBC Bookie Award, and a Governor Generals’ Award for Poetry for Lake of Two Mountains. Her next poetry collection, Earle Street, will be released by Talonbooks in early 2020.
Byron Sollazzo
Byron is an alumnus of the Reynolds High School Slam Poetry team, where he worked and created with his co-poets for four years, competing in slam competitions both on the island and the mainland. After graduating from high school in 2018, Byron took a little break from writing to focus on university, but always kept a foot in the door of poetry. He is very much looking forward to being involved in the upcoming showcase and is excited to perform for the first time since high school as well as take in his fellow creators’ pieces.

All are welcome to a special lecture by VAC executive director, Kegan McFadden, on the topic of Ho Tam’s Cover to Cover.
Cover to Cover offers a selection of photo, video, artist books, and magazines spanning this artist’s career. The exhibition deconstructs Tam’s recent book works displaying selected pages and images on the gallery walls connecting with earlier works and installed organically so the images exists as a free flowing collage. His long time investigation into place, memory, queerness, and the body is shown through works that blend together to create a larger installation engaging the breadth of Tam’s artistic production.
This Thursday, McFadden will respond to Tam’s photo series, Ghost Image, through which the artist collects photographs and documents of his lover Kirby who died of an AIDS-related illness in the mid-90s. McFadden will talk about stories, influences, and how these two fleeting things can be made material. He states:
Ho titled the project after his favourite author, Hervé Guibert, another artist who died from AIDS-related causes. I plan to read an excerpt from the Guibert book as well as analyze Ho’s approach to dealing with the material left after Kirby’s death.
This hybrid talk/lecture/reading will take place in the VAC Store Street gallery so the audience can view the series while listening to the research/response. [note: we now have chairs!]

Special to this Victoria version of Cover to Cover is a selection of work produced by Ho Tam during his residency with the Canadian Forces Artists Program (CFAP), an opportunity that allowed him to travel on a Navy ship for ten days, from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to Esquimalt, BC.

LADY PARTS
Lady Parts, a contemporary art exhibition held at the Victoria Arts Council Head Quarters from May 10 – May 31 with an opening reception May 10 from 5pm – 8pm.
Featuring sixteen talented local artists this new exhibition seeks to showcase the work of the Victoria members of the all-female Thrive Art Studio Group.
Originally started in Vancouver, THRIVE Mastermind is a community of local and online artist groups who believe that “thriving artists must make art, meet the people and do the work”. Gender inequality in the arts has been highlighted again and again over recent months with many major art museums re-visiting their collections and starting to address this imbalance. The Thrive Network provides a powerful platform for female artists to connect, share their experiences and raise each other up through community, in a non-competitive environment.
The artists featured in the show attended monthly group meetings for one year and united to support each other, share knowledge, humour and give accountability in their art practices.

It’s Only an Island If You Look at It from The Water exhibits the work of University of Victoria Department of Visual Arts MFA students: Angus Ferguson, Claire Scherzinger, Dani Proteau, Kaitlyn Dunsmore, Lauren Brinson, Levi Glass, and Mona Hedayati.
This year-end show highlights the diverse artistic practices of select first and second year MFA candidates through their explorations of perspective, both literal and metaphorical.
The exhibition continues from April 5th-14th at the Victoria Arts Council space at 1800 Store St.

International Women’s Day: REWORKED is curated by Ciel Arbour-Boehme, a queer gender non-conforming student of international development and visual art at the University of Victoria. Ciel has lived on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territories, Victoria BC, her entire life. As an uninvited settler, Ciel works to decolonize her learning and artistic practices. International Women’s Day: REWORKED is Ciel’s first curatorial role, and is honoured to work with the VAC to create this one-night celebration of gender diversity and artistic practice.
This one night event will see a showcase of live performances in the first half of the night, including, but not limited to drag, poetry, spoken word, and dance. The second section of the night will be dedicated to video work including narrative video, video art, and soundscapes.

At 91 years old and with over half a century of artistic output, Pat Martin Bates has been widely recognized and praised within Canada, winning awards and honours such as her RCA and FRSC designations, her Queen’s Jubilee Medal, an honorary degree, and exhibitions throughout the country. Still, her achievements have been even more deeply appreciated overseas. She has exhibited throughout the world over many decades, and has been honoured with awards ranging from the Global Graphics Award in Holland in 1993 (the only Canadian to achieve this honour) to the Gold Medal at the International Biennale of Prints, Norway to the Critics’ Choice Award at the Print Biennial in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia in 1977. Affectionately regarded everywhere as PMB, she is known in England as Lady Print, in Japan as Ambassador Extraordinaire, and in Yugoslavia, The Angel from Heaven. She is esteemed universally as the doyenne and spirit of Canadian printmaking.

Hjalmer Wenstob was raised on an island in Barkley Sound, in Huu-ay-aht First Nation’s territory, off the west coast of Vancouver Island. It was there that his understanding and desire of pursing both his traditional Nuu-Chah-Nulth and contemporary art practices began. Wenstob is an interdisciplinary artist who specializes in sculpture, installation, and carving. He is Nuu-Chah-Nulth from the Tla-O-Qui-Aht First Nations on his father’s side, and Norwegian and English on his mother’s side. Hjalmer speaks of three dialects of his work– contemporary, traditional, and community-based. Through his contemporary dialect, Hjalmer completed both an undergraduate and master’s degree at the University of Victoria, exploring the relationships between cultures and art, and the balance between traditional and contemporary. His work, at times is highly political, and uses humour and irony to pose difficult questions of respect, reconciliation, and environmental issues. Recently, Hjalmer and his family opened Cedar House Gallery in Ucluelet, B.C. where he is exploring ways of weaving his contemporary/political work with more traditional materials and styles.
The exhibition, For Ground; Background is a culmination of selected sculptures from over the last four years, as well as new works and installations. For Ground; Background hosts works of question, concern and education, in regards to environment, urban relationships to the land, and treaties.
