Everyone is creative! CreativeMornings is the world’s largest face-to-face creative community. Today, attendees gather in cities around the world to enjoy fresh coffee, friendly people, and an international array of breakfast foods. Volunteer hosts and their team members organize local chapters that not only celebrate a city’s creative talent, but also promote an open space to connect with like-minded individuals. The growing archive of past breakfast talks is humbling. From design legends to hometown heroes, speakers are selected by each chapter based on a global theme. June marks the first CreativeMorning organized by the VAC and we are pleased to announce that Lisa Kenoras will be our inaugural speaker. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . June’s theme is Matriarchy Imagine a society in which women make all the key decisions that shape the safety, health, education, opportunities, and culture of the community. What would your town or city look like if the systems and structures were re-envisioned and women held the majority of the positions of power and leadership? What would change? What would it feel like? Or maybe you already live in such an environment; societies led by powerful women exist today, including Native and Indigenous communities around the world. This month, we shine a light on all the leaders who are also women, from across the vast spectrum of identities and experiences of womanhood. The decision-makers, the life-givers, the caregivers, the frontline workers, the problem-solvers, the world-changers. The organizers and activists, the artists and writers and innovators. The teachers, scientists, medical professionals, politicians, business owners. The ones with megaphones and the ones working behind-the-scenes. Without you, where would our world be?CreativeMornings/Rotterdam chose June’s Matriarchy theme, and Xaviera Altena created the accompanying illustration. (People of the spread-out lands) I grew up on Splatsin’s traditional territory in Enderby B.C but moved to Victoria to learn about my Wsanec traditional ways. I self-identify through the Secwepmc’ulecw and Wsanec and the continued engagement with family, community, and relation to land resurgence and governance. I find strength in reclaiming self-determination through revitalizing culture and language practices. My responsibilities are dedicated to grassroots and social justice movements for Indigenous communities. I am the founder of the recent launch of Matriarch Resistance, inspired to create safe spaces for Indigenous women and femme communities, while bringing awareness to violence against women and MMIWG2S. Empowering Indigenous women and femmes through self-awareness, self-identity, and self empowerment.” |
