Artist Statement:
To some, observing these pieces may feel like entering a corporate Walmart after a week of camping. To others, it may represent the feeling you get when looking up to the looming powerlines lining our streets.
The structures and infrastructure around us shape our lives, psychologically and materialistically. We often normalize ourselves to our environment over time; loud structures eventually blend in and become part of our “normal” lives.
Through photography-based art, I began to represent this world through a new lens. By strategically mashing images together digitally, I’ve been able to present said structures in what feels to me like a different dimension. I hope this series puts an emphasis on such surroundings. An emphasis on their abnormalities.
Powerlines (or telephone lines) are the trees of the people, built by the workers. They interconnect us, through electricity, and information. A necessary structure in this society, and a loud one.
In modern time we have datacenters. An ever moving force of late stage capitalism, controlled by the few to affect the many. Money is funneled into these invasive projects while people live paycheck to paycheck.
Then comes colour;
Colour is a powerful tool, yet you may notice on most drives, in most cities, it is used for advertisement; to promote a company that has robbed its workers from true value of their effort. It is often weaponized by society to further personal goals, to manipulate how we feel when looking at certain information, structures, billboards.
By obfuscating the effect of colour, with abnormal colouring in these composed environments, I believe that it shines a new light on the same structures of our day to day life.
I believe that colour should be a tool of the people, controlled by the people. A great way to begin this, under my belief, is painting the wooden powerlines that are scattered across the island. Such a simple change can make a large difference.
Artists should be hired to paint our city
to bring the power of colour back to the people.
