About the Project: This series of paintings is an act of rebellion against a lifelong habit of feeling guilty about everything. As a mother and a human being in this era of rapidly shifting cultural, political and environmental change there is a palatable and growing sense of doom. How to negotiate all of this? How to process it and react but still recognize the goodness when so many moments of joy also bring a sense of guilt? In short, how can you be happy when the world is falling apart? I struggled with what to paint when there were other things, important things to be done. Then it occurred to me that now, more than ever we need to celebrate the good things in our lives, no matter how small. We need art, music, books, or to just sit on the couch and do nothing after a long day. It’s vital and worth savoring every moment. Shuck the guilt, lick the plate.
